Hampshire Farm Shop and Restaurant in the Test Valley

Filed under: Hampshire Food Producers — davidmoldon @ 5:37 pm

Looking for somewhere casual to shop this Christmas

This tranquil retreat offers wonderful opportunities to relax, dine and escape the stresses of life. Fully licensed eatery, Kimbridge Restaurant, is a favourite both with locals and visitors from further afield (parking is ample), with welcoming staff who create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The setting is idyllic, next to the flowing trout stream, and the food itself is wonderfully traditional, just like the building.

For an ideal morning pick-me-up, pop in for a hearty breakfast and steaming-hot coffee. Alternatively, drop by for a wholesome lunch. For starters, choose one of the delicious homemade soups, perhaps followed by the trout, which is a firm favourite with regulars. With the river only a stone’s throw away, and the Kimbridge Trout Fishery next door, you won’t find fish much fresher than this. Annie’s is also open for afternoon tea and in the evening for functions. Scheduled events are advertised in advance, but the premises can also be booked for private parties.

If you’re on the look-out for presents for friends and family (or a treat for yourself) make sure to head to the fantastic on-site shop, which stocks an excellent range of cards, gifts and local artists’ work. With comforting cuisine, superb produce and warm customer service, Kimbridge Restaurant provides a perfect escape-from-it-all experience.

Don't buy at your supermarket when you can get the very best here.

The reason I am promoting this wonderful Aladdin’s cave of unbelievable  delights is that I went there last weekend and bought some neck of lamb and pork belly, both not expensive but produced the best meals I have had in ages.

Get down there and try it out, you will not be disappointed.

Hampshire attractions, what to see, where to stay, where to eat and what’s on.

Check out our interactive map to see where everything is in Hampshire.

I have lived in Hampshire all my life, but am still amazed at the diversity of things to do as a local or for someone on holiday. We are so lucky to have such a fantastic coastline with historic events that can hardly be equalled anywhere in the country. The warships that left Portsmouth for duty to defend our shores, The Schneider Trophy Races that propelled aviation and engine design more than any other event, and of course the D-Day invasion that surely was the greatest piece of logistic endeavour ever attempted by a nation under siege.

I have collected as a food lover many places to buy local produce, and one such Farm, Laverstoke Park Farm, owned by ex F1 Driver Jody Scheckter, is promoting this weekend Car-Fest along with Chris Evans, This is his dream of the perfect family festival, and of course, CarFest is also raising money for BBC Children in Need.

We take our Beer very seriously in Hampshire with many micro breweries sprouting up, and this weekend hosts the famous Flower Pots Beer Festival.

I have run B&B for many years and even with the strict ruling over health and safety, our Farmhouse B&B’s are some of the best you can find, and if that is not your scene, check out our self-catering establishments.

We are fortunate to have again a premiership football team in Southampton with a wonderful history, and our cricket team are in the 20/20 finals on Saturday, wish them well.

Well, if you can think of any other reason to shout out Hampshire is great, drop me an email, info@agentsmart.co.uk

Buckler’s Hard on the Beaulieu river, part of the New Forest, Hampshire

The Master Builders pub.

Britain’s maritime history has fascinating links with Buckler’s Hard, on the tidal river three miles downstream from Beaulieu. The hamlet consists mainly of two terraces of houses set widely apart and separated not only by the road down to the river but also by a wide turfed forecourt, on which New Forest ponies occasionally come for a graze.

Yet this tranquil place was once large and noisy with sounds of shipbuilding. The first ships were built there in Henry V’s time and upstream, at Bailey’s Hard, Beaulieu river produced its first naval vessel in 1698. But by the end of the 18th century Buckler’s Hard (a firm causeway built over soft ground) was employing four thousand men, building England’s “wooden walls” from the plentiful oak trees of the New Forest.

Many famous men-of-war were built from 1749 until well into the next century by Henry Adams, the Master Builder, followed by his two sons. Four of them, Agamemnon, Illustrious, Swiftsure and Euryalus fought at Trafalgar. Although at that famous battle Lord Nelson flew his flag in Victory, his favourite ship was Agamemnon. Nelson was given command of Agamemnon (launched in 1781) when the French Revolutionary Wars threatened Britain in 1793. It was when commanding her off Corsica that he lost his right eye.

Between 1745 and 1822 no fewer than fifty-five warships, fifteen merchantmen and two fire-ships were launched at the Hard. But the war of 1939-45 also gave this spot a chance to play a part in history.

Part of “Mulberry Harbour” for the Normandy landings was made nearby and from the old shipyard itself came anti-submarine patrol vessels and craft for air-sea rescue work.

Welcome to the motor yacht Seafin. Your own private floating paradise on the England’s South Coast and perhaps one of the most enjoyed charter boats on the Solent. When on Seafin you dictate the pace and the mood as life onboard is all about you, your friends, family, colleagues or clients having a good time.
The choices of things to do, see, eat and drink are wide and our team is here to take care of everything. It’s the most enjoyable and productive day that you could imagine for birthdays, boat shows, events, family, film & TV, hospitality, incentives, meetings, parties, regattas, seminars and training.
With beautiful views over the Beaulieu River and set at the end of the grassy street that is Buckler’s Hard village, it is difficult to imagine a more picturesque setting for a hotel on the whole south coast of England. What’s more, The Master Builder’s is located on Lord Montagu’s Beaulieu Estate in the New Forest National Park and just a few minutes drive from Beaulieu Palace House and the National Motor Museum.

Award winning Hampshire Ales that take some beating.

Filed under: Hampshire Food Producers — davidmoldon @ 3:30 pm

Director Martin Roberts along with his much loved Ale about to be dispatched all over Hampshire.

I made an appointment to visit Bowman Ales having tried their Wallops Wood at The Kings Head, Hursley, and realised that this is how a bitter should taste.

The drive over was great, bright sunshine and the countryside beginning to shake off its winter slumber with daffodils along the roadside.

Bowman Ales is conveniently situated amongst some of Hampshire’s most productive farmland and whilst the malted barley they use is a Wiltshire product, Ray Page, Director (Brewer) is hoping to use Hampshire malted barley fairly soon.

The process is fairly straight forward, boiling water is passed over the malted barley in the Mash Tun, and this process is called spurging the malt, and the resulting syrupy-sweet malt tea, called wort, is transferred to another fermentation vessel where it is heated along with all the other ingredients that go to make the Ale.  Picture below is the fermentation vessel.

After fermentation has taken place, the 720 gallons are transferred to their final storage tanks, the whole process takes about 2 weeks.

Perhaps this is not the time to say you should think about saving our wildlife species, probably saving our own species is more important. Well I believe we should do what we can in winter to feed our native garden birds; once they are gone it will be a sadder place.

Last year was particularly bad; the main photo was taken on December 2nd 2010 and we have had a pretty mild winter so far,  but that is not to say a cold snap will not arrive soon.

I tried some of the strawberries shown in the photograph, and truly they should be eaten straight from a days picking with the sun on them, so I can see why they are only for sale ready picked! How many disappear without getting to the check-out, tooooo many!!

This year we will NOT being doing PYO Strawberries at all, the only ones available will be ready picked, so supplies will be limited to what we produce each day & cannot be guarenteed. Fresh Fish and Shellfish from Portsmouth

Filed under: Hampshire Food Producers — davidmoldon @ 4:51 pm

I’ve been meaning to take a trip to Viviers (UK), Portsmouth fish merchants for some time, and certainly glad I made the effort. If you have ever taken the ferry to the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth, you were literally 100 yards from Viviers.

We take fresh fish, well in the case of supermarkets it is probably far from fresh, but this luxury has only been possible since refrigeration and rapid transport systems were introduced. Previously fresh fish was a luxury only available to those that lived near a fishing port, or fish was salted or smoked to allow for transport to inland towns.

Today one of the best known fish merchants in Portsmouth, and also nationally and internationally, is Viviers (UK) ltd.  Founded by Eric McLeod in 1985 as a shellfish merchant, and a year later as a fish merchant selling direct to the public, the business now employs over 20 staff and is the largest buyer of wild oysters (Ostrea Edulis) in Europe.

I bought a couple of wild bream and had them professionally filleted by one of the friendly staff, and along with a bag of shell on prawns, bon appétit.

Curry Sauces to Die for, actually to Live For!

Filed under: Hampshire Food Producers — davidmoldon @ 2:26 pm

I first tried Madhuban curry sauces some years ago and because they are not readily available forgot all about them. Well Agent Smart found them and would you believe in Hampshire. I ordered on-line and true to their word the four wonderful pots of Curry sauce arrived the next day. Seriously, I love cooking but why waste loads of time preparing authentic sauces when you can have them delivered to your doorstep. I fully recommend them, don’t hesitate and order now.

A bit about Madhuban sauces from their website.

At Madhuban we pride ourselves on our truly authentic restaurant-style sauces. They don’t just taste like the real thing…..they are the real thing. No pale imitations these – they come straight from the curry house kitchens. We think they’re perfect. With the help of the recipes on our site, so will you.

Range of Curry Sauces.

These are the most popular restaurant Curries:

Korma Sauce, Tikka Masale sauce, Hot Madras Sauce, Jalfrezi sauce, Medium Bhoona sauce, Balti sauce, Thai Red Curry sauce, Thai Green curry Sauce, Mint Raita sauce.
