Hampshire attractions, what to see, where to stay, where to eat and what’s on.

Check out our interactive map to see where everything is in Hampshire.

I have lived in Hampshire all my life, but am still amazed at the diversity of things to do as a local or for someone on holiday. We are so lucky to have such a fantastic coastline with historic events that can hardly be equalled anywhere in the country. The warships that left Portsmouth for duty to defend our shores, The Schneider Trophy Races that propelled aviation and engine design more than any other event, and of course the D-Day invasion that surely was the greatest piece of logistic endeavour ever attempted by a nation under siege.

I have collected as a food lover many places to buy local produce, and one such Farm, Laverstoke Park Farm, owned by ex F1 Driver Jody Scheckter, is promoting this weekend Car-Fest along with Chris Evans, This is his dream of the perfect family festival, and of course, CarFest is also raising money for BBC Children in Need.

We take our Beer very seriously in Hampshire with many micro breweries sprouting up, and this weekend hosts the famous Flower Pots Beer Festival.

I have run B&B for many years and even with the strict ruling over health and safety, our Farmhouse B&B’s are some of the best you can find, and if that is not your scene, check out our self-catering establishments.

We are fortunate to have again a premiership football team in Southampton with a wonderful history, and our cricket team are in the 20/20 finals on Saturday, wish them well.

Well, if you can think of any other reason to shout out Hampshire is great, drop me an email, info@agentsmart.co.uk

Ideas for some of the best places to eat in The New Forest

When you walk into Pebble Beach you open the doors to a new type of dining experience. Situated on the cliff top you will enjoy unrivaled sea views towards the Needles which, during the summer, can be enjoyed from the amazing terrace for all fresco dining. More Info and directions

Mike Caddy, the proprietor of Pebble Beach, has brought his years of experience from top notch restaurants both in the UK and California, to create a place where fabulous food and attentive service is the priority. Mike has fulfilled his dream of running a restaurant that offers something for everyone, using the very best locally sourced ingredients. Whether you eat in the vibrant restaurant, relax in the bar or have an aperitif at the oyster counter, you will be well looked after.

The kitchen, run by renowned head chef Pierre Chevillard, produces a fantastic seasonally changing menu offering a range of dishes that caters for all tastes. From light lunches to formal dinners you will be spoilt for choice. See their events and promotions

The East End Arms, Lymington.

This great Pub is to be found in the Quiet village of East End, close to Lymington.Owned by John Illsley, base guitarist from the Dire Straits. From an interview with Rick Stein, John said when he bought the pub the locals said “don’t change anything”, well I am going to check it out for myself.
There are 5 delightful en-suite rooms with power showers, flat screen TV and tea and coffee facilities.
Rates include full New Forest breakfast, they require your first night’s rate as a non-refundable deposit.

I have checked it out and can’t wait for a nice day to sit outside under the umbrellas and just chill out!

The Pig, Brockenhurst.

Overseen by chef James Golding (ex Mark Hix –Ivy, Caprice, Sheekys and Soho House New York) James’s key two lieutenants won’t be his sous chefs but his forager and his kitchen gardener. This is an utterly genuine reinvented way of running the kitchen, the menus will change by the minute depending upon what the forager turns up with or what the kitchen gardener deems to be in perfect condition. Home grown with clarity of flavour, true to the micro seasons and influenced by the forest are the drivers of our food style. Our further commitment is the 25 mile menu – whereby some 80% of fresh ingredients will be sourced in the local home area.

The duo will be such a vital part of the culinary mix that The Pig’s menus will change not so much daily but hourly, subject to what Garry unearths or what Mike deems to be in perfect condition. Served in an authentically reproduced Victorian greenhouse dining room, complete with bare wood table tops and mismatched bone handled cutlery – a meal at The Pig will be a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Hampshire Restaurant where local matters, The Bugle Inn, Twyford.

Pictured above from left to right: Shauna Brame (Chef-de-partie), Lenny Carr-Roberts (Chef Patron), Marco Pierre White, Harry hardman (Trainee Chef) & Simon Bell (Sous Chef)

Eating out for the English is a relatively new experience, my early memories of eating out with my parents was in a Hotel, I don’t think restaurants existed 50 years ago in England, maybe in London.

I have been “banging on” a Graham Hill expression, for some time about how lucky we are in Hampshire to have such a wealth of fantastic locally produced food. Well here in Twyford is a refreshing example of a Chef putting my words into practise. The Bugle Inn Twyford, was purchased by Lenny Carr-Roberts and his partner Francesca Luckett in 2008, and the business has gone from strength to strength based on “Localism” .

I met Lenny today at The Bugle, and we had a real foodie talk, myself being easily excited about food found his background of 25 years in the business and the odd name dropped like Marco Pierre White and Albert Roux a bit like talking to a star, well at least a Michelin star, but his success also comes from 8 years working for the DeVere Group where no doubt he learnt the all important lesson of how to make money in the restaurant business.

Lenny’s enthusiasm for buying local was amazing, meat from Jody Sheckter’s Laverstoke Farm, local asparagus and watercress and fish from Viviers in Portsmouth.

The menu at The Bugle changes almost every day, whatever is brought in fresh that day, and locals are encouraged to trade their vegetables for a pint of beer or a glass of wine, who said bartering was dead.

Lenny was not ashamed to admit the majority of his dishes were aimed at the ladies, I thought the men paid the bill, but at least you don’t have to discard unwanted salad and the slice of orange, or has that had its day. There is a hint of French cuisine to most of his dishes, Lenny having spent some years in France, and I believe that will continue, but not as some of us regard French cuisine as heavy covered with cream but light and full of complex flavours.

Monday is Special Offer Night.

Well done Lenny, hope to revisit you soon.

Hampshire Restaurant with Stunning Sea Views and Rooms,

Filed under: Best places to eat in Hampshire,Hampshire Accommodation — davidmoldon @ 12:37 pm

It is quite rare to come across a restaurant with a panoramic sea view of the Needles, but there is such a place in Hampshire, Pebble Beach.

With this fantastic late summer weather it would be a shame not to give this amazing restaurant a try. I was lucky to arrive on Wednesday 28th of September, a beautiful day and the al fresco diners were hard at it cracking their lobster claws and washing them down with chilled white wines. Lukas Pastor, the manager was good enough to give me a guided tour of the Penthouse suite, and again with fantastic views, it would be difficult to match this anywhere.

Welcome to Pebble Beach in Barton-on-Sea

When you walk into Pebble Beach you open the doors to a new type of dining experience. Situated on the cliff top you will enjoy unrivaled sea views towards the Needles which, during the summer, can be enjoyed from the amazing terrace for al fresco dining.

The kitchen, run by renowned head chef Pierre Chevillard, produces a fantastic seasonally changing menu offering a range of dishes that caters for all tastes. From light lunches to formal dinners you will be spoilt for choice.

Pebble Beach is not only a hugely popular restaurant but also offers exclusive hotel accommodation. The Penthouse Suite, which opened earlier this year, offers a luxury retreat with fantastic views of the coast from the bedroom and sitting room. Not only is this a wonderful apartment for a weekend break but it can also be hired for private dining and events. As well as The Penthouse Suite we offer luxury en-suite bedrooms which have recently been refurbished and were awarded four diamonds by the English Tourist Board.

Eating out where the New Forest meets the Sea in Hampshire.

Filed under: Best places to eat in Hampshire — davidmoldon @ 9:28 am

Some years ago I stumbled upon a great Italian restaurant in the Hythe Marina and wondered if it was still in business. Last Sunday I made the trip to Hythe and yes La Vista is still very much in business and we had a fantastic lunch there. La Vista was busy without feeling crowded and very much a family venue on a Sunday, so typically Italian, always having time for children.

Walking around the Marina it is obviously the place to eat, with Boathouse Hotel newly refurbished and offering “boutique” rooms for those wishing to explore the area or just don’t fancy the trip home that night! Eating out on the decking is fun in the summer and is well catered for from both La Vista and the Boathouse.

Hythe village is full of interesting shops and the Hobbits Pub in the old Georgian part offers a wide range of Mediterranean and English meals.

WHY NOT LEAVE THE CAR IN SOUTHAMPTON AND TRAVEL BY FERRY

Hythe Can be reached by Ferry from Town Quay, Southampton and takes approx 20 mins costing £13.00 return for a family of 4. The Ferry passes the big liners (if in port) and then at the end of one of England’s oldest piers (1879) you catch an electric train, introduced in 1922, to the village of Hythe.

Hampshire Pub that got it right

Filed under: Best places to eat in Hampshire — davidmoldon @ 2:15 pm

It’s nice to write a review when you are pleased with the experience from a particular pub or restaurant, well here is one.

Sunday the 5th of June, terrible weather, unfortunate for Winchester’s  “One Big Table”, despite this still enjoyed a dish of Philippines’ stir fry but somehow the cold and my English appetite left me still wanting. So off to the Wykeham Arms for a red wine and low and behold they had a bar meal of Large Yorkshire pudding filled with roast beef, potato and beans, actually broccoli, and boy that filled the gap, well done Wykeham Arms all for £5.00, not including the wine!
