Aviation History of Hampshire
Aviation has not only been very important to Hampshire, but 70 years ago the skies over the South of England were to determine the outcome of the Second World War.
Pictured are two revolutionary aircraft designed and manufactured at Woolston, Southampton.
Left is the Supermarine S5, the winner of the 1927 Schneider Trophy race in Venice; this led to two more successful race wins in 1929 and 1931. The knowledge gained from this great achievement led to the development of the Supermarine Spitfire, below. The man who designed both was R.J.Mitchell.
